私は俳句を作っている２４才の男性でオーストラリア人です。俳句に出会ったのは３年半前のことで、それ以来ほとんど毎日のように俳句を通して色々な新しいことをみつけています。発見したことを俳句の手帳に書いて、日記の代わりにしています。そしてインターネットという今話題になっているマルチメディアのコンピューター通信網で様々な国の人達と一緒に俳句について話しています。
私にとって俳句の魅力は何なのかというと、やはり俳句の哲学です。俳句という”言葉のかけら”みたいな短い詩は読む人に大きなことを考えさせることができます。そしてその考えが人間を自然に引き戻します。
最近、世の中では環境問題が注目されていますが、俳句というものは自然を大切にする考え方に基づいています。人間も含めて、どの生き物も他の生き物に頼って生きている関係が、よく俳句で表現されています。おたまじゃくしの俳句を作る時に、自分がおたまじゃくしになったつもりで作るか、そのおたまじゃくしと人間である自分の関わりみたいなものを詠むか、そのどちらかで作るといいです。そうすると自分だけでなく、その俳句を読む人も自然に近付くことができます。
そのような俳句独特の視点から世界を見ることによって環境を大切にする心が生まれてくるに違いありません。オーストラリアにも俳句協会がありますので、自分の国に帰ってもその人たちと一緒に俳句の考え方を普及させようと思っています。

I am a twenty-four year old Australian man who enjoys making haiku. I first stumbled upon haiku three and a half years ago and, since then, have been discovering new things through haiku almost every day. Rather than keep a diary, I jot down these new discoveries into my haiku notebook. Recently I have been using the Internet to converse with people from many different countries on the topic of haiku.
The thing that attracts me to haiku more than anything else would have to be the haiku philosophy. This "literary fragment" which is haiku can cause readers to become aware of much greater things and this awareness helps bring humans back to nature.
Recently the world has become concerned with environmental problems and the foundation of haiku is this awareness of the environment. Every single living creature, including people, relies on other living creatures to survive and this idea is prevalent in haiku. When making a haiku about a tadpole there are two ways to go about it. The first is to imagine that you are the tadpole and to feel as it feels. The second is to write about the tadpole and its relationship to yourself, a human. In doing so, not only yourself but those who read the haiku too are brought back to nature.
In looking at the world from this viewpoint, a viewpoint peculiar to haiku, it is natural that those doing so will begin to take care of the world in which they live. As Haiku Clubs also exist in my country, upon my return I plan to join together with other Australian haiku poets to spread this haiku way of thinking.
